Hi Friend, I’m Julie.
I began keeping a journal when I was 14 and, ever since, writing has been my way of uncovering truths. Back then, I thought there was such thing as The Truth and I was rather earnest about finding it. Now, I’m in my mid-forties and I understand that life is a lot more nuanced than I once thought. There are few absolute truths - most are relative, influenced by a person’s nature, experiences and context.
Learning to speak my truth is an ongoing challenge for me. The messages I received growing up was that I should keep everyone else happy, win their approval. My point of view was irrelevant. So I didn’t learn how to hear myself, let alone how to speak up for myself. Writing Relatively True is one was that I’m challenging myself to say what I really think & feel.
Relatively True is a deliberately broad title for this newsletter to allow me the scope to write on different topics. I write personal essays about what’s on my mind, usually leaning toward personal reflections and everyday life experiences. Recently, a lot of my writing has been about women’s issues and life’s big questions.
I’m certain that knowing our own truth empowers us to be authentic in the world. And, when we’re strong in ourselves, we’re more able to accept and, even, appreciate others who have truths different from our own.
My hope is that you’ll resonate with some of what I write but also that you’ll find yourself ruffled at times too. Because both of these responses will show you something about yourself, helping you to inch closer to your own truth. I end each essay with a few prompts for your journal to encourage you along the path.
I write in snatches, grabbing time to write at the edges of the day and publishing when I can. I can’t promise you a predictable schedule of emails but I hope you’ll find value in my newsletters and that they’ll be a welcome surprise when they arrive in your inbox.
Yours truly,
Julie
